A lone candle flickers in a second floor room
from the sidewalk below, I watch it fend off evening's gloom
but try as it might, that resolute light
It can't last forever, will soon give up the fight
It reminds me of things, of future and past
Of the what seems eternal, but never will last
Song, life and love, fade as the dove
The reaper claims all, that hand from above
But still I watch that light in the window up high
And it's not sadness I feel, I need not ask it why
it stands undaunted against a fate so unwanted
defiance to immutable fate is enough to be vaunted.
